TEL AVIV -- Orang Yahudi dikenal unggul dalam sejumlah bidang
seperti perdagangan, obat-obatan, dan keuangan sejak abad pertengahan.
Mereka juga terkenal dengan kepandaian intelektual. Apa yang membuat
mereka memiliki keunggulan itu menjadi misteri dalam sejarah panjang
Yahudi.
Zvi Eckstein dan Maristella Botticini mencoba mengungkap misteri
tersebut melalui bukunya berjudul: "The Chosen Few". Buku yang
baru-baru ini diterjemahkan dalam bahasa Ibrani tersebut merupakan
tesis yang mengungkap perkembangan intelektual orang Yahudi.
Dalam
tulisan Manuel Trajtenberg, seorang ekonom Israel yang diterbitkan
Haaretz, setiap orang Yahudi dituntut belajar membaca dan menulis
setelah kehancuran Yerusalem pada 70 Masehi. Mereka dituntut memiliki
ilmu pengetahuan agar dapat berasimilasi. Dengan kebutuhan itu,
orang-orang Yahudi memiliki keterampilan yang penting untuk pembangunan
ekonomi mereka.
Dari waktu pembuangan Babilonia, pada abad
keenam sampai pada 70 Masehi, Yudaisme berdiri di atas dua pilar utama:
ritual di kuil dan membaca Taurat. Elit kecil dari pendeta mengepalai
kuil dan pembelajaran Taurat. Tidak adanya suatu pusat nyata ritual,
kelangsungan hidup Yudaisme bergantung pada kemampuan menciptakan
alternatif yang bisa beradaptasi dengan kondisi baru.
Kewajiban
setiap orang Yahudi membaca dan mempelajari Taurat merupakan dasar dari
keberadaan orang-orang Yahudi pada saat itu. Untuk memastikan
kontinuitas, setiap orang ditugasi untuk mengajari membaca dan menulis
anak-anak sejak usia muda. Hal itu dinilai merupakan perkembangan
revolusioner dalam dunia yang waktu itu masih didominasi penduduk buta
huruf.
Menanamkan membaca dan mengajari Taurat mensyaratkan
pengeluaran tinggi. Namun, kebanyakan orang Yahudi pada saat itu masih
bertani dengan kemiskinan dan penderitaan. Karena itu, orang Yahudi
menanggung beban keuangan pendidikan. Dengan beban tersebut, mereka
memilih antara tetap belajar atau melupakan Yudaisme.
Pada masa
Talmud, sekitar abad keenam, dua pola muncul di komunitas Yahudi yakni
tingkat melek huruf meningkat di komunitas Yahudi yang ekonominya
berbasis pertanian. Di sisi lain, ada perpindahan agama khususnya ke
Kristen. Perpindahan agama membuat populasi Yahudi menurun dari 5,5 juta
pada tahun 65 menjadi hanya 1,2 juta pada tahun 650. Epidemi dan
pembantaian juga berkontribusi pada penurunan populasi ini.
